Moon walker in Russian was the first of two unmanned lunar rovers landed on the Moon by the Soviet Union as part of its Lunokhod program. The Luna 17 spacecraft carried Lunokhod 1 to the Moon in 1970.

Launch date – 14th September 1970

The spacecraft soft-landed on the Moon in the Sea of Rains on November 17 and operated for 322 days, traveling 6.55 miles. It returned 20,000 TV images and 206 high-resolution panoramas. It also performed 25 lunar soil analyses and other experiments. The rover would run during the lunar day, stopping occasionally to recharge its batteries via the solar panels. At night, the rover hibernated until the next sunrise, heated by the radioactive source.

Ceased operating on 14th September 1971

The Luna 21 spacecraft launched by a Proton-K/D rocket on 11th January 1973 from Baikonur 81/23 launch site and soft landed on the moon 15th January in Le Monnier Crater.

Operational for four months. Generally considered that dust covered it and was thus unable to cool causing failure. Covered 24 miles of terrain and sent back 86 panoramic views and 80,000 TV pictures.

On June 4th 1973 it was announced the program had finished.
